Tombstone inscription: "In memory of Lemuel Chapman who died March 14th 1827 in the 62 year of his age. He was a soldier in the American Revolution and served during the war. He belonged to the army when General Washington marched in and took possession of New York, after the British army evacuated the city. He was a man of laborious industry during his life, and possessed a large share of friendship and good will to man. Low lies the wariour [sic] his battles are o'er. May the fame of his deeds last till time is no more." |
